CPS students volunteer for clean-up of Telankhedi Lake
“Working with a wide cross-section of volunteers has demonstrated that when a group of concerned people come together to accomplish a major goal, the task becomes very small,” is what a volunteer from the International Coastal Clean-up quotes.
This was truly observed in our city when a group of 54 students from Class VIII, Centre Point School came together to work for “A Clean Telankhedi Lake.” The area the teenagers toiled to clean up was about 300 sq. meters and its urgency was acutely felt as it was the time of Mahalakshmi and Ganesh Visarjan, a religious ceremony which would involve idol immersions.
A lot of garbage including polythene bags, pieces of idols made out of POP, flower remains, etc. was collected and sorted. Much to everyone’s amazement, the non- degradable refuse collected amounted to an astounding 80kgs approx. The students were provided with gloves and caps to ensure protection and personal hygiene.
All the debris collected was enlisted in a Data card to be forwarded to the co-coordinators of Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Clean-up which would then be analyzed and the findings would be shared with the world through the Ocean Conservancy website. The process of cleaning the sides of the lake along with its small tanks lasted almost 4 hours from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The students were accompanied by 5 teachers as well as people in boats who pulled out refuse from the lake.
At the end of the day, the smiles of satisfaction on the young faces were enough to convey their happiness at a job well done.
Later, their efforts were valued when these volunteers were felicitated with certificates of appreciation at the hands of Dr.Ankush Dhananjay, Commissioner of Police, Nagpur. Dr.Dhananjay lauded their hard work at helping to make Nagpur a “Clean Green City.”
As part of the on-going Traffic Rules Awareness Initiative, a small street play by senior students emphasizing the dangers of Under-age driving was also staged as part of the function.
